Man Oh Man Monday No. 14 | Father's Day Edition No. 6

We continue on with Father's Day as it is less than a week away.  Have you gotten your card done or bought?

I am putting a tiny spotlight on hybrid Father's Day cards today.  Hybrid simply means using something created on a computer (digital) and then printed to make something physical.  You can create the digital design/sentiment yourself, purchase other people's designs from various online stores or create something for yourself using purchased designs.  There are some truly amazing digital products and designers out there.  For recommendations, let me know because I can do a detailed list.

For the cards today I started with Shine, this digital journaling card product by Emily Merritt Designs:

This mix of journaling cards has it all: feminine, masculine and gender neutral for young and older alike for all sorts of occasions with bright happy colors.  Included are convenient pdf files for easy printing of the journaling cards. I printed out one of the pdf files. My printer makes everything look distressed (a positive spin on the lack of quality) so don't assume that your print quality will be as poor as mine.  I just go with it until I get it fixed.  If you like the distressed look I have found that using an eraser on the image...well...for lack of a better word...erases some of the ink.

I chose to make cards from the "you shine" and "you light up my life" journaling cards.  I am still on a sun ray/sun burst kick so these cards are inspired by that idea as well.

Card No. 1

For you shine I cut the sentiment using an oval die and decided to use my Studio Calico burst mask with Mister Huey's Calico Shine on white cardstock for a cool subtle tone on tone look.  I added "dad" using the Headline alphabet die and a couple of star wood veneers.  Simple, bold and interesting.

Truly, in person the shine looks really cool.

Card No. 2

For You Light Up My Life I decided to add a cute light bulb from a Lawn Fawn stamp set made for Studio Calico's Spencer's Card Kit.  I pulled out some new mustard embossing powder to emboss the image.  I also did some sewing on this card as I had the sewing machine out still after this project.  I am still a bit shocked by how easy it was to sew on paper.  Maybe I am finally mature enough to sew!  I am only about 1 or 2 decades behind everyone else (as usual).   I used the Headline alphabet die once again and added a touch of shimmer and interest by adding stickles to the "pop".

Fun, colorful and easy.

I may or may not be around again for a bonus MOMM Father's Day Edition this week because I recently received some new stamps that are meant to be inked up!  If I don't, I hope you have a delightful Father's Day celebrating the fathers/father figures that have enriched your life!

Happy creating,
Shay.

P.S. I am submitting these cards to the Simon Says Stamp Challenge blog for Masculine/Father's Day.

P.S.S. You can find me on Paper Wings Productions' The Aviary tomorrow for Tutorial Tuesday.

Man Oh Man Monday No. 13 | Father's Day Edition No. 5

Good Monday to you!  Yes, I am back on the appropriate day this week.  I got my...act together and took advantage of some time yesterday to get crafting with Simon Says Stamp's June Card Kit: Something Awesome.  When I first saw previews of the June's kit I was stoked as it was perfect for MOMM, father's day and any dude card.

I am a fan of Kelly Purkey and was thrilled with her Dude stamp set which is still available while the June card kit is sold out (I obviously wasn't the only one stoked).  If you haven't had a chance to check out her blog I recommend perusing it.  She's one hip and happenin' gal (unlike this dusty relic) and I love reading about her adventures and I am endlessly intrigued by her journey to build her own brand (seriously makes me happy to read about how creative brands/companies come about and are run and may only be trumped by seeing creative spaces or reading foodcentric memoirs with recipes included.  Big happy sigh.).

Also, this weekend I caught up and watched all of the videos from the His & Hers class from Online Card Classes which was really informative and inspiring.  I am always running so behind on my online classes, but believe me that although the class may no longer be live it is still packed with great material.  I like to stuff my mind with as much inspiration as possible and see what pops out.   Sometimes I clearly see where I took my inspiration and other times it was ideas that grew together from this card, that blog, this layout, that technique and so on and so forth.

I created this simple, but fun card from the kit which is for father's day, but could also easily be for a birthday or a memorable thank you.  I can't get enough of playing with several sentiments together and used a mix of stamps from the Dude stamp set along with a saying from Basic Grey's Hipster snippets found in the card kit.  I love that I could add the little man wood veneer that matched exactly the shape of the man icon in the stamp set.  I had a wood veneer the exact same size, but I chose one slightly smaller so that the stamped image looks like a shadow or like the projection of the man is larger or grander than the size of the man himself (as in "he was larger than life" or "he cast a long shadow").  I am getting a little allegorical in my old age.

The colors of the pictures are more blue and less green than in real life.

I hope you enjoyed the card and have a fabulous week!

Happy creating,
Shay.

Man Oh Man Monday No. 12 (on Tuesday) | Father's Day Edition No. 4

Man Oh Man It's Not Monday.  No excuses from me...my Memorial Day was spent mostly watching movies with my family including "Argo".  I hope you also had a wonderful Memorial Day with family and friends.  I want to thank those who serve/served our country to allow us to do just that.

So today we are going with a card to honor the men in service who are also proud papas because although we have days marked off on the calendar to commemerate our service men and women, I think any day of the week is a good day to honor them as well.

The background is actually something I started on Saturday using the Watercolor Wonder stamp set by Papertrey Ink for another card for Papertrey Ink's May Blog Hop, but it was all sorts of shades of wrong for the floral card I envisioned and reminded me of camouflage.  I saw it again sitting upon my table and decided it would be perfect for today's card.  I added more stamping and a banner sentiment stamped from Papa Love by Mama Elephant which I gold embossed.

I think it is turned out pretty striking and cool.   What do you think?

Thank you for taking the time to visit and have a wonderful week!

Happy creating,
Shay,

Man Oh Man Monday No. 11 | Father's Day Edition No. 3

Celebrating Father's Day continues here on MOMM.  Clean and simple are the themes of the day.  Some new stamps from Mama Elephant were awaiting me in today's mail which I wanted to play with and what better excuse than I have to post on my blog?  Self-enabling just got necessary now that I "have to" post on my blog.

The keystone stamp set for this Father's Day clean and simple smorgasbord is Papa Love.  Packed full of great sentiments, a ticket frame and a few images, Papa Love will serve you well as a foundational stamp set for your stamping needs for guys.   All of the cards are one layer and I added dimension with Copic markers.

For my first card I decided to play with the moustache and tie images to create a man of sorts.  I am hoping the circle sentiment comes off looking a little like a monocle.

My next card plays off the "man of the house, king of my heart" sentiments paired with the little Leo lion in Cosmic Stars.  I saw these and immediately had a vision of a card.  The darling little heart is from Midnight Letters.  Seriously, am lovin' on this little number.  I also imagine changing out the lion for the ram, bull, scorpion, crab, fish or goat depending on the guy's astrological sign (my dad is a Scorpio and it would be awesome to do this card with that instead).

For my last card I paired Papa Love with So Breezy.  I saw these two stamp sets and it clicked together to me.  I added a hand drawn double border for just a bit more interest.

Super simple cards, but so much fun.  I hope you are inspired to create some Father's Day cards now too!

Happy creating,
Shay.

Man Oh Man Monday No. 10 | Father's Day Edition No. 02

Happy Monday to you!  A quick card and post today as allergies have pinned me to the mat.

This card is all about using tons of different stamps that catch your fancy to create a background that says a lot about the awesome dad in your life.  To finish off the panel I simply stamped out "dad" with an alphabet stamp set (inking the edges) and added it to the background using dimensional adhesive.

For more interest I added the stamped panel at an angle and curled up the edges (under the edges I also added some dimensional adhesive).

That's it for Man Oh Man this Monday.  Have a rad week!

Happy creating,
Shay.

Man Oh Man Monday No. 9 | Father's Day Edition 01

Today is the first MOMM focusing on Father's Day. Today's card is traditional in color, design and pattern so it can easily be given to a grandpa too.  I have a thing for travel related anything.  I can't seem to pass up maps, planes, air mail iconography on fabric, stamps, papers and elements.  Perhaps this has to do with so many good memories travelling in the car.  I still love car rides, plane trips, boat expeditions and travel excursions.  I think travel themes are a natural fit with guys too.  I know the male members of my family all have affection for one type of vehicle or other or just in travel in itself.  You will see this theme come up time and time again from me.  I just can't help it!

When I thought about making a Father's Day card I pulled out some of my travel themed stamps from Tim Holtz.  Nearly all Tim Holtz products are a crafty gal's best friend when you need to make some testosterone enriched cards.  In particular I grabbed the Travel Labels stamp set.

I really love creating backgrounds with stamps.  Using the larger Fiskars stamp press and all of the stamps from the stamp set I created a pattern that I stamped in Versamark upon a piece of patterned paper from the He Said She Said He Said 6x6 paper pad.  I then heat embossed the images with clear embossing powder.

This is when I pulled out my Distress Inks.  You can't go wrong with some Distress Inks and ink blending tool.  There is fun to be had (I don't get out much obviously) in seeing the images being revealed as more and more ink is placed on the paper and the embossing powder resists the ink.

I wrapped some ecru crochet cotton around the resist panel and attached a round tag that I stamped with a sentiment from Fillable Frames #4 using some Hero Arts pool ink.

I finished off the card by adhering the resist panel with dimensional adhesive to a piece of patterned paper from the same 6x6 paper pad and then a kraft card base.

MOMM Tips:
MOMM Tip No. 1: Go with Tim Holtz.  Products designed by a man with a man's sensibility.
MOMM Tip No. 2: Customize pattern paper.  Heat emboss on patterned paper for a new look that is perfect for your project.

So there you have our first MOMM Father's Day card.  I'll be back next week with another card to inspire you to tackle your father's day cards.

Happy creating,
Shay.
